Spa & Hot Tub Heaters: what it involves

Spa heating comes in two very different setups. An attached spa, the raised one that spills into the pool, shares the pool's pump, filter and heater; valves switch the water so the heater only has to warm the small spa volume. A stand-alone hot tub has its own small electric heater element inside the cabinet, run by the tub's own control pack.

On an attached spa, slow heating is often a valve problem: if the valves leak by, the heater is trying to warm the whole pool. It can also be a heat pump that's simply too slow for spa use on a cool night, which is why many spas run on gas. In a hot tub, the usual failures are a burned-out heater element, a pressure or flow switch, or a control pack that's lost a relay, often after a power surge.

Signs your spa heating has a problem

  • Attached spa takes much longer to heat than it used to
  • Pool level rises or falls while the spa runs (valves leaking by)
  • Hot tub display shows FLO, HL, OH or a heater error
  • Breaker trips when the hot tub heater turns on
  • Water is warm in the pool but not in the spa

Tell the tech whether it's an attached spa or a separate hot tub; the fixes are different.

Common methods

Valve and actuator repair

Leaky diverter valves and tired actuators are rebuilt or replaced so spa mode actually isolates the spa.

Heater element and switch replacement

Hot tub heater elements, flow switches and high-limit sensors are tested and replaced to match the control pack.

Heating strategy

For spas that need fast heat, the tech can explain adding a gas heater or upsizing, with honest numbers on run cost.

Do spa heater repairs need a permit?

Replacing an element, switch or valve on an existing spa or hot tub is service work. New electrical circuits for a hot tub, a new heater or gas line work generally are permitted. In Hernando County, including Spring Hill, the Hernando County Building Division handles that; in Pasco it depends on whether the parcel is in a city or the unincorporated county.

How a spa heater visit usually goes

  1. Which setup? The tech identifies whether it's an attached spa or a stand-alone hot tub and how it's heated.
  2. Check valves and flowOn attached spas, valve positions and leak-by are tested first.
  3. Electrical testsElements, switches and the control pack or heater board are tested with a meter.
  4. QuoteParts and labor are priced in writing before ordering.
  5. Heat testThe spa runs long enough to confirm a steady rise in temperature.

Note how long the spa used to take to heat; it helps the tech judge whether something has changed.

What spa heater repair costs

HomeAdvisor's St. Petersburg data shows pool and spa heater repairs averaging about $754, with a typical range of $160 to $1,373. Hot tub element and switch repairs are often at the lower end; adding or upsizing a gas heater for a spa is a replacement-level job.

Spa & Hot Tub Heaters questions

Why does my spa heat so slowly with a heat pump?

Heat pumps add heat gradually. On cool nights they can take hours to raise a spa, which is why gas is common for spas.

My pool rises when the spa runs. Is that related?

Usually it means a valve is leaking by, which also slows spa heating.

Can a surge kill a hot tub heater?

Yes. Surges often take out the control pack or a relay along with the heater circuit.
