Learn moreRepair or replace?
Most heater problems are repairable: a sensor, a capacitor, a fan motor, an igniter or a control board. Replacement starts to make sense when the expensive core part fails on an older heater (the compressor or coil on a heat pump, the heat exchanger on a gas heater), when the same heater keeps breaking, or when parts are no longer made. A rule of thumb many techs use: if the repair costs more than about half of a new heater and the old one is past eight to ten years, replace it. Ask for both prices in writing.
